The MCAT Reddit page has become very popular over the years, rising to be the #1 social media platform for MCAT advice. Students studying for the MCAT can benefit greatly by utilizing the wealth of free community insight and resources available on the MCAT Reddit forums. Learn how to use the MCAT subreddits, r/MCAT and /r/premed/, as you prepare for your MCAT.

Reddit For Beginners

If you’re already familiar with the Reddit platform, you can skip this section.

Reddit is an online platform that allows its users to decide what content is relevant and valuable, and what isn’t. Regarded as “the front page of the internet,” users can find information, entertainment, in-depth discussion, or advice on just about any subject imaginable, from the best cat videos to everything you need to know about Brexit.

To actively engage and participate in online discussions on Reddit (upvote, downvote, comment, etc.), you need to sign up for a Reddit account. If you only wish to view content as a spectator, you do not need to sign up for an account. To get the most out of Reddit for MCAT students, we recommend you create an account so that you’re able to fully engage with the community.

Reddit is divided into subreddits. Subreddits are pages or online message boards devoted to a particular subject or conversation. Each subreddit comes with its own list of rules. If you violate these rules, the moderator of the subreddit can remove you.

Reddit has a strict but simple list of rules known as “Reddiquette.” The rules largely revolve around treating fellow users with respect, properly sourcing any material that you share, and avoiding self-promotion of your brand or business. If reddiquette is violated, you may have your site privileges revoked.

MCAT Reddit Subreddits

There are two main subreddits that MCAT students should join and engage with.

Subreddit /r/MCAT

The MCAT Subreddit has over 58,000 subscribers with hundreds of those subscribers online at any given time. /r/MCAT promotes itself as “a place for MCAT practice, questions, discussion, advice, social networking, news, study tips and more.”

Ensure you follow each of the /r/MCAT specific rules to avoid having your posts deleted, or—in extreme cases—removal from the subreddit.

Subreddit /r/premed

The PreMed Subreddit has over 86,000 subscribers with hundreds of those subscribers online at any given time. /r/premed promotes itself as “a place for us neurotic premeds to post links and have discussions with each other.”

Ensure you follow each of the /r/premed specific rules to avoid having your posts deleted, or—in extreme cases—removal from the subreddit. Rule number 8 “Why can’t I see my posts?” explains that any account under 72 hours old or with fewer than 10 comment karma is not able to post. An AutoModerator will automatically remove your post until your account reaches the proper age and karma limit. To improve your karma, begin engaging with any Reddit community by leaving comments.

Reddit MCAT Study Schedule

On the MCAT subreddits, you’ll find a wide variety of alternative study schedules that worked for previous students who took the MCAT. Communicate with other users in order to find tried and tested methods of studying for the MCAT. If you find one study schedule doesn’t work for you, move on to the next one. Reddit MCAT Anki Deck

Many generous people on Reddit share their own Anki Decks. These are incredibly helpful to students since they were made and used by other MCAT students. The Reddit format allows you to see comments and feedback from students who used each deck too, so you can get a sense of how helpful they are.

Khan Academy MCAT Reddit

MCAT students share their experiences with Khan Academy on Reddit. It’s a chance to share feedback and advice for studying with the Khan Academy.

Reddit MCAT Exam Day Thread

/r/MCAT creates a Reddit MCAT exam day thread for every exam date. It’s a space for students taking the MCAT on the same day to engage with each other in preparation or commiseration. Here you can share your own worries and support other community members.

Reddit MCAT Score Release Thread

/r/MCAT creates a Reddit MCAT Score Release Thread for each release of scores. Similar to what’s above, these threads allow students to communicate with others who took the test at the same time about how they did, what they struggled with, and which sections they excelled on. You can see how others scored, hear how they feel about it, and discuss the pros and cons of retaking the MCAT.

There are hundreds of other MCAT students online at any given time. Many of them have the same questions you have, and are experiencing or have already experienced what you’re going through.
